Porches is a dedicated app for Petaluma with original storytelling and live programming. It's also an interactive map, with a curated directory of events, places, and people in town.
It's still in beta, but you can get a peek at it here and request an invitation.
A strange thing about the incredible technology in our pockets is that it pulls our attention away from where we actually live. Reaching for our phones becomes an out-of-body experience.
Instead of focusing our energy on the people around us — the people we can have around the dinner table, whose shops we can walk into, whom we can hug — the internet's gravity pulls our consciousness elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the online local tools that do exist have descended into noise and complaints. It's 2026, and we still don't really know our neighbors.
We think the internet should help us connect with and support the people and places that actually shape the fabric of our everyday lives.
A place that sees itself clearly is a place that can take care of itself for decades to come.
